Our History
The story of Living Hope Presbyterian Church cannot be told without first understanding the rich and enduring legacy of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, a legacy that stretches back nearly two centuries and forms the very foundation upon which our local congregation stands. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Ghana’s oldest continuing church, traces its origins to 18th December 1828, when the first Basel Mission missionaries arrived at Osu (Christiansborg). Though the early missionaries faced tremendous hardship, many perishing from malaria and yellow fever in a land then grimly called the “Whiteman’s grave”, their determination never wavered. It was the arrival of Caribbean Christian families in 1843, at the invitation of the King of Akuapem, Nana Addo Dankwa I, that finally turned the tide. These Caribbean Christians brought with them evangelism, spirituality, education, and a deep commitment to community, values that continue to define the PCG to this day. Through wars, expulsions, and the transition from colonial rule to independence, the church endured and grew. In 1918, under the guidance of the Scottish Mission, the church became a self-governing body with African leadership, a landmark moment in Ghana’s Christian history. When Ghana gained independence, the church proudly took its current name: The Presbyterian Church of Ghana. Today, the PCG stands as one of the most respected Protestant churches in the world, organized into Presbyteries and Districts spanning the entire nation and beyond, including the Asante Presbytery under which our congregation proudly worships. It is within this great heritage that Living Hope Presbyterian Church was born. In 1993, under the Asante Presbytery and the Yennyawoso District, a small but faithful community of believers gathered in Sepe Buokrom, Kumasi, with a shared vision to bring the light of the gospel to their neighbourhood and to build a community rooted in faith, hope, and love. The founding members carried with them the same pioneering spirit as those early Basel missionaries and Caribbean Christians who laid the foundation of the PCG over a century before. Where those pioneers faced the challenges of a new land, our founders faced the challenges of a growing urban community, and like their forebears, they answered the call with courage and conviction. From those humble beginnings, Living Hope Presbyterian Church has grown into a vibrant congregation serving the people of Sepe Buokrom and beyond. Guided by the motto “That They All May Be One”, the banner of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, we remain committed to unity, service, and the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We are a people shaped by history, sustained by faith, and propelled by hope. As we look to the future, we do so standing on the shoulders of generations of faithful men and women, from the banks of the Rhine in Basel, to the shores of the Caribbean, to the hills of Akropong, and now to the heart of Kumasi. Living Hope Presbyterian Church is not merely a local congregation. We are a living thread in the rich tapestry of a church that has stood the test of time, and by God’s grace, we shall continue to stand.
We are a congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), one of the oldest Protestant denominations in Ghana, tracing its roots to the Basel Mission which arrived on the Gold Coast in 1828. Our local assembly proudly carries forward this rich heritage of Reformed Christianity.
